Here's the reality of traveling and living in Mexico. Sometimes you have a wonderful trip planned to a beautiful city that hosts film festivals and creates amazing candy and artisanal crafts, and then you find out that a drug cartel has blocked off all roads leading to that city by stealing cars, setting them on fire to create a blockade, and terrorizing the entire area.
Morelia in the state of Michoacan was a no go this time around - but my friend Ida and I have arrived safely in Catemaco, Veracruz. Beautiful views of a lake with eery islands dedicated to studying the behavior of monkeys and other wildlife. All after a fun two nights in the Port of Veracruz for a wedding and enjoying the warm weather.
And guess what! I encountered (and subsequently paid) my first corrupt cop of Mexico. More about that later.
